More than 40 eurosceptic Tory MPs have signed a letter warning the Government that it must not try to keep Britain in the EU by "stealth" during a transition period after Brexit.

The letter, from Tories on the European Research Group, says that it would be an "historic mistake" to stay in the Single Market after March 2019.

It also states that the UK must leave the Customs Union so that it is free to negotiate and sign deals from "exit day" and calls for an end to payments into the EU Budget during any transition period. The intervention by the eurosceptic MPs will increase pressure on Mrs May to deliver a clean Brexit. It comes amid concerns that Brexit could be watered-down to reduce the risk of a "cliff-edge" for businesses.
