The Merseysiders are believed to have turned down three offers from the Catalans for the playmaker with the last one reported to be for a fee approaching £136m including add-ons.

The Premier League club were adamant that the Brazil international was not for sale but Barcelona still hoped to get their man.

Coutinho handed in a transfer request in an effort to get Liverpool to relent but the transfer window closed in Spain on friday night with the player remaining at Anfield.

However, Barcelona have put a different spin on the situation now, claiming that Liverpool were prepared to let the 24-year-old leave the club - but their €200m price tag was the reason the deal didn't happen.
